MacMillan Named to WUSA All-Star Team

September 9, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
San Diego Spirit News Release

SAN DIEGO - Spirit forward Shannon MacMillan got two pieces of good news today as she was named as a reserve player to the South All-Star Team for the 2002 WUSA All-Star Game in Portland, Oregon, on September 21 at 4:00 pm ET (1:00 p.m. PT), but also became a starter when Carolina Courage forward Birgit Prinz had to bow out to due club commitments in Europe. The match will be broadcast live from PGE Park on PAX.

MacMillan, a former University of Portland star, returns to her college town where she torched college defenses for four years, winning both the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year awards as a senior. MacMillan led the Spirit in scoring during the 2002 season with five goals and eight assists, and yesterday scored her 47th career international goal in the USA's 8-2 drubbing of Scotland.

MacMillan moves into a starting role for the South squad as Prinz's German club, FFC Frankfurt, has a UEFA Women's Cup match in Yugoslavia during the WUSA All-Star Weekend. The WUSA's inaugural All-Star Game, presented by Hyundai, will have a World Cup flavor as 17 of the 32 players competed at the historic Women's World Cup in 1999. A look at the All-Star reserves follows:

SOUTH ALL-STAR RESERVES

NORTH ALL-STAR RESERVES

The North team will feature players from the Boston Breakers, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge and San Jose CyberRays, while the South will consist of athletes from the Atlanta Beat, Carolina Courage, San Diego Spirit and Washington Freedom.
