May 17, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Ohio Machine News Release

The Ohio Machine made a late push, but fell short against the New York Lizards, 11-9, Saturday.

Ohio (1-3) started off each half strong, scoring three straight to start the game and two straight to begin the second half, but the Lizards (2-2) pushed back both times, going on two four-goal runs.

Lizards face-off man Greg Gurenlian won the first three face offs of the game, but Ohio's Eric O'Brien won the final two of the first half, and the first two of the second half to spark the Machine. O'Brien scored just 14 seconds into the second half, while midfielder Kyle Harrison added another barely more than a minute later to give Ohio a 7-5 advantage.

New York answered with back-to-back goals by Albert Maione and Tommy Palasek before Ned Crotty gave the Lizards an 8-7 lead with 7:35 on the clock in the third quarter. A goal from Tommy Palasek made it four straight for the visitors.

Midfielder Tom Schreiber scored his third goal of the game before midfielder Peter Baum completed a hat trick of his own, but it was not enough for the Machine to come back.

It was a record setting night for one Ohio player, as defenseman Max Schmidt became the Machine's all-time leader in games played as he made his 29th appearance for the club - passing now-New York Lizard Kyle Hartzell. Schmidt played high school lacrosse at Upper Arlington before playing collegiately at the University of Maryland.

Harrison, Schreiber and Baum - the Machine's three No. 1 overall picks in the MLL Collegiate Draft - combined for a total of four goals and two assists in the first half as Ohio kept the game even, 5-5, going into the break. Baum scored twice in the first and Schreiber added another, but New York answered with four straight goals.

Harrison's pair of first-quarter assists tied a club record for the opening frame.

As Schreiber and Baum poured in three goals each, O'Brien, attackman Logan Schuss and Harrison each tallied one goal. Harrison had two assists and Baum, midfielder Kiel Matisz and attackman Steele Stanwick each had one assist. Midfielder Dominique Alexander led the Machine with four groud balls.

Ohio's starting goalie, Brian Phipps, finished the day with 11 saves on 22 shots on goal. O'Brien went nine-for-24 on face-off attempts against Gurenlian.

JoJo Marasco and Maione scored two goals each, but it was Palasek who stole the show with four goals for the Lizards. New York goalie Drew Adams made 12 saves from 21 shots on goal.

Next up, the Machine is set to travel to Annapolis, Md., for a game against the Chesapeake Bayhawks on May 31. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the CBS Sports Network.
