Lucas named to AFL All-Rookie team

TAMPA, FL -- Tampa Bay Storm lineman Al Lucas was named to the Arena Football League's All-Rookie team, the league announced Monday. Lucas becomes the fourth Storm player to ever be named to the All-Rookie team, and the first since the 1999 season.

Lucas played in 13 games for Tampa Bay this season, recording 18.5 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss. He also had 1.5 sacks and had a blocked kick and a safety.

Lucas is one of three linemen named to the league's all-rookie team. Orlando's EJ Burt and Arizona's Bryan Henderson were the other linemen.

Georgia's Leon Murray was the All-Rookie team quarterback, with Dallas' Ja'Mar Tombs getting the nod at fullback/linebacker. Orlando's Thabiti Davis was named the All-Rookie wide receiver/linebacker and Dallas' Will Pettis garnered All-Rookie honors at wide receiver/defensive back. The All-Rookie offensive specialist was Orlando's Travis McGriff, with Los Angeles' Damen Wheeler and Dallas' Jermaine Jones joining the team at the defensive specialist position. Chicago's Keith Gispert was named the All-Rookie kicker.

Lucas joins Charles Wilson, Tommy Henry, and Matt Huercamp as Storm players to receive All-Rookie honors. All three received the honor in 1999. The only other player on the current Storm roster to receive All-Rookie honors during his career was wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders, who was recognized in 2000 while with the New Jersey Red Dogs.

The Storm finished the regular season this past weekend with a 42-38 win over the Georgia Force, improving to 12-4. That tied the Storm for the best record in the league and gave them the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

Tampa Bay will receive a first-round bye and open postseason action on Saturday, May 31, at the St. Pete Times Forum. Kickoff against the yet to be determined opponent will be 3:00 pm.
