Lottery Games to Run with Arena Football League through MDI Entertainment and Scientific Games
December 5, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
ALPHARETTA, Georgia â The exciting action of the Arena Football League (AFL), the nation's fastest-growing sports league, will be available for lottery games and promotions, the AFL, Scientific Games (NASDAQ: SGMS) and its wholly-owned subsidiary MDI Entertainment announced today. The retail licensee partnership is a three-year deal.
Under the terms of the agreement, lotteries will be able to market instant scratch tickets featuring the logos, themes, marks designs and colors of the Arena Football League or, with their approval, specific AFL teams and special events, available at lottery retailer outlets.
"The AFL is first and foremost a fan-friendly property that shares an exciting entertainment experience with fans everywhere, whether in-arena or on NBC," said GLENN HORINE, Executive Vice President, AFL Properties. "Our partnership with MDI provides us another avenue to bring enjoyment to our fans and promote our great sport. We are excited to partner with a proven promotional leader that can translate the fun of Arena Football outside of the arena."
Nineteen AFL teams will take the field in the 2004 season, with all but two of the teams located in thirteen U.S. lottery jurisdictions. This includes eight of the nation's top 10 media markets. The AFL has generated steady growth, including a 15-percent increase in 2003 and a 25-percent increase over the last two years.
"Arena Football's slogan says it all," said STEVE SAFERIN, President of MDI. "Real Close. Real Fun. Real Football. The timing of this license agreement is ideal for lotteries because we have lead time to plan the promotions."
Lottery proceeds support a variety of good causes, from education and senior citizen assistance to economic development, property tax relief, natural resource programs and many others. Approximately $13.7 billion was generated for good causes among U.S. lotteries in fiscal year 2003.
MDI is the worldwide leader in licensed lottery games and promotions. In addition to Arena Football (www.arenafootball.com), the company provides lottery games based on sports brands such as the NBA, WNBA, NHL, Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, Louisville Slugger and NASCAR drivers Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Bill Elliott, Mark Martin, Jeff Burton, Ricky Rudd and Greg Biffle.
