San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The SaberCats are proud to announce eight-year veteran OL/DL Dan Loney has returned to San Jose for the 2011 season. The team also announced 2010 Defensive Player of the Year Gabe Nyenhuis has been activated off the Injured Reserve List and the addition of WR Victor James.
"I can't say enough about Dan Loney and what he meant to the SaberCats and our success on the field," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He was one of best centers in the league and a big reason why we had one of the best offenses in the league for many years. We're very excited to add him to our team as we look to make push for the playoffs."
OL/DL DAN LONEY
Loney (6-1, 280) played seven seasons for the SaberCats from 2002-08, initially playing at both center and nose guard for San Jose. One of the best offensive linemen to ever play for the SaberCats, he was voted the team's Lineman of the Year from 2006-08 and had a streak of 47 consecutive starts during that stretch, playing in 90 career games for San Jose. A member of all three ArenaBowl championship teams, he was originally signed by the SaberCats as a free agent on March 16, 2001, spending the season on the team's practice squad. He most recently played for the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz in 2010.
A graduate of Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo), Loney played four seasons (1996-99) under former SaberCats line coach Bill Tripp where he was a starter on the 1997 team that went 10-1 and boasted one of the top offenses in the country with two running backs that gained over 1,000 yards.
Loney becomes the seventh former SaberCat to return to San Jose in 2011.
WR VICTOR JAMES
James (6-1, 215) played collegiately at New Mexico where he spent time at wide receiver and quarterback. Playing primarily at wide receiver as a senior, James totaled 35 receptions for 398 receiving yards and three touchdowns playing in 12 games (eight starts) for the Lobos.
