Long Beach Armada signs former 2nd round pick Josh Womack

Long Beach, CA. April 3, 2009 - The Long Beach Armada today announced that they have agreed to terms with outfielder Josh Womack. The speedy, sweet-swinging outfielder was in AAA Tacoma and AA West Tennessee with the Seattle Mariners in 2008.

"I'm thrilled to have Josh as part of the Armada for 2009," said Long Beach Manager Garry Templeton. "We've had to rebuild the outfield this year with a couple of retirements and CF Steve Moss being acquired by a major league oragnization, so this is a key signing for us. Josh will be great to have on the team and exciting for our fans to watch."

Womack, 25, 6-1, 200 lbs, was signed in the 2nd round of the 2002 amateur draft by the Seattle Mariners after his senior year at Crawford High School in San Diego. He rose through the Mariner's farm system reaching AAA in 2008 where he hit .333. With good power and blazing speed, including a Triples title in the Midwest League, he was stacked up in the Seattle system and granted free agency making him available to showcase his skills with the Armada. He will join a veteran-laden Long Beach squad that is consistently one of the strongest teams in the Golden Baseball League and also leads the league in numbr of players acquired by MLB teams.

The Long Bech Armada enter their fifth season in the professional independent Golden Baseball League (GBL) in 2009. One of the charter members of the league, the Armada have been in the playoffs twice and have posted a wnning record every season.. Playing at historic Blair Field, the team is managed by former major league All-Star shortstop Garry Templeton and has had 17 players sold to major league organizations in their first four seasons. Very active in the community, the team is one of the major sources of fundraising for many charitable organzations in the Los Angeles area.
