Lexington Legends News Release
Lexington Legends outfielder J.D. Martinez was among 10 players named to the Topps Class A All-Star team. Topps, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, honors the top performances in all minor league classifications. Class A baseball includes the South Atlantic League, the Midwest League, the California League and the Florida State League, a total of 52 teams. Martinez earlier was named Topps' South Atlantic League Player of the Year. He was the only South Atlantic League player named to the Class A All-Star team.
Martinez, 23, led all of Class A with an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of 1.030. He led the SAL in batting with an average of .362, and also topped the league in slugging percentage at .598 and on-base percentage at .433. At the time of his promotion to double-A Corpus Christi July 15, he also was leading the league in hits, doubles, extra-base hits, runs scored and total bases. Martinez hit 15 home runs and drove in 64 runs in 88 games with Lexington.
"It's almost hard to keep track of the honors J.D. has won this year," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "They just keep coming. All are well-deserved. He had a great year on the field and was a real leader for the Legends in every way."
Martinez was named SAL Most Valuable Player and Minor League Player of the Year in the Houston Astros' organization.
