
Late Surge Propels Slam Past Vancouver in Season Opener, 116-92

BELLINGHAM, Wash. "" The Bellingham Slam broke open a close game in the fourth quarter as they defeated the Vancouver Volcanoes, 116-92, in the International Basketball League opener for both teams.
In a game that featured 23 lead changes, the two teams were tied at halftime and the Slam held a five-point lead at 83-78 after three quarters.
Guard Jacob Stevenson and center Evan Matteson both enjoyed strong nights for the Bellingham, combining for 55 points.
With the score tied at 77-all with 4:31 left in the third quarter, the Slam scored the last five points of the frame and then opened the fourth with five points from Matteson to extend their lead.
A 15-0 run in the closing stages of the game broke open an otherwise close contest.
Stevenson led the Slam with 30 points while Matteson finished with 25 to go with 10 rebounds. Guard Morris Anderson was also a key performer, posting totals of 21 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
Forward Chehales Tapscott posted a team-high 18 points and 14 boards for Vancouver, while former Slam guard Paul Hafford finished with 17 for the Volcanoes.
The two teams play again in a rematch in Vancouver on Sunday, with a 5 p.m. Tip-off scheduled for Clark College.
