Late Schofield Goal Gives City Islanders Victory
July 31, 2004 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Manchester, NH â Rookie David Schofield scored with just three minutes left in regulation to give the Harrisburg City Islanders a crucial 3-2 victory over the New Hampshire Phantoms at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday night. Aleksey Korol added three points on a goal and an assist and fellow forward Mike Feniger assisted on two scores, while Dave Kern recorded his fifth win in goal with a six-save performance.
The win holds substantial playoff implications: coupled with a 1-0 Long Island Rough Riders loss to Pittsburgh, Harrisburg (7-6-3, 24 points) has moved back into second place in the Pro Soccer League's Atlantic Division with four games to play.
After midfielder Ryan Ackerman had given New Hampshire a 1-0 halftime lead in the 38th minute, another Harrisburg rookie, Steve Fisher, tied the match after converting a Feniger service in the 48th minute. Just two minutes later, Feniger created another score, this one from the recently added Korol (his first goal with Harrisburg), and the Islanders led 2-1.
When Ackerman tied the game at 2-2 in the 73rd minute, it seemed as if Harrisburg might be headed for their fourth straight overtime game, the last two of which resulted in losses decided by penalty kicks.
But Schofield, who had not scored a goal since the team's season opener on April 17, answered the call, putting a Korol feed past losing keeper Josh Cole (six saves) to secure the Islanders win.
Notes: Feniger was making his first start since May 1...With his goal, Fisher has re-assumed the team lead in scoring with 12 points...Korol tied the team single-game record with three points...Harrisburg will now play three of their final four games at home, beginning on Friday, August 6, when the Phantoms visit Skyline Sports Complex. Game time is 7:35 p.m...The Islanders will then play a road game against the Western Mass Pioneers on Sunday, August 8, before concluding their regular season with home games against the Westchester Flames (Wednesday, August 11, 7:05 p.m.) and Charlotte Eagles (Saturday, August 15, 7:35 p.m.).
