Lake County, Florida New Entry This Season
August 17, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the Florida Thundercats are the latest entry into the fast-growing professional basketball league and will begin play in December. "I know this is a very late entry," stated ABA CEO Joe Newman, "but the team owner, Kevin Simmons, has been working hard for nearly a year putting together his organization and team with 2010 as the target date.
However, he has made such great progress with the city, the venue and the team that he has asked to play games this season. With a great Southeast Division, there was no reason to delay. If Kevin does not play the full schedule of 30 games, the Thundercats will not be playoff eligible, but the games will count in the standings."
The principal owner of the Florida Thundercats is Kevin Simmons who played basketball for the University of North Alabama and help lead the team to the NCAA Division III National Championship. After serving four years in the US Army, he has been a promoter of sporting events for over ten years and currently runs the biggest basketball tournament in Florida. He has also done promotions for top comedy shows and music concerts.
Joining the Management Team are Kim Myers and Deanna Clover. Kim is originally from Houston, Texas and has trained in all forms of dance including ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and salsa and danced with a professional dance and entertainment company. Kim has done television commercials and movie, dance with the NBA for the Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic and served as team leader. A graduate of UCF with a BS in Early Childhood Education, she is now teaching. Deanna is from nearby Kissimmee, Florida and is also a dance just finishing her fifth season with the Orland Magic and is currently featured in the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Magazine. Deanna has danced for the AFL Orlando Predators AFL dance team, Walt Disney World Entertainment, Carnival Cruise Lines and has been teaching dance for the last eight years. She has attended SUNY at Buffalo, Valencia Community College and University of Central Florida.
"Sports and entertainment are our business," said Simmons. "With Kim and Deanna, plus others we've brought aboard, we are going to change the face of the ABA basketball experience with music and dance that will add a tremendous amount to the every game. We'll create an exciting fun filled night at affordable prices and we are very appreciative of the ABA for allowing us to play games this season."
