Katia Named Player of the Week
Published on July 15, 2002 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, July 15, 2002) - San Jose's Katia has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Week for the week ending July 14, 2002. Katia scored three goals as San Jose went 1-0-1 against Atlanta and San Diego last week. Katia joins Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon as the only players to win the Player of the Week award two times in 2002.
The Brazilian forward scored two second-half goals and drew a foul that set up a third as the CyberRays snapped a three-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Beat at Spartan Stadium on Wednesday, July 10. The WUSA leader in total shots (68) and shots on goal (41), Katia registered seven total shots and five on target against Atlanta.
On Sunday at San Diego, Katia scored the game-tying penalty kick in a 2-2 draw against the Spirit. In addition to converting on the penalty kick, she helped create San Diego's infraction that led to the goal. Katia evaded San Diego defender Anna Kraus and sent a cross to Sissi, whose shot bounced off San Diego midfielder Shannon Boxx's arm, awarding San Jose the penalty kick. Katia, whose 11 goals rank second in the WUSA, created problems for the Spirit all day, recording six total shots and four on goal.
Katia, who captured 25 points in the voting (25 first place), outdistanced Carolina's Birgit Prinz (13 pts.), Washington's Carrie Moore (9 pts.), Boston's Maren Meinert (3 pts.) and four players with two points each. The WUSA's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
