Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
The Hammerheads had a great opportunity to come through on Opening Night at Roger Dean Stadium but could not come up with the big hit and Jupiter eventually fell to Fort Myers 5-1.
With the Hammerheads trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning the situation seemed perfect for some Opening Night magic. Cleanup hitter Viosergy Rosa, who slugged 23 home runs with Greensboro last season, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. But Steven Gruver got Rosa to groundout to first to end the threat.
The next inning Fort Myers gained some breathing room, highlighted by a two run triple off the bat of Max Kepler, scoring three times to take a four run advantage.
Tim Shibuya would enter the game for the Miracle in the bottom of the eighth and he tossed two perfect innings to close out Fort Myers' first win of the year.
The Hammerheads lone run was scored in the first inning when Cameron Flynn led off the season with a single and Terrence Dayleg pulled a ground rule double to left. Flynn would score when Austin Barnes grounded out.
Jupiter would manage just three more hits, all singles, the rest of the evening. For the most part the bats were silenced by Fort Myers starter Jason Wheeler who picked up the win after allowing just the one run in 5.2 innings of work.
Trevor Williams got the start for Jupiter and was handed the loss. Williams allowed a double and a single to start the game before Dalton Hicks smoked a comebacker that appeared to hit Williams in his right bicep. A run scored on the play and Williams was taken out of the game because of the injury.
On short notice Chipper Smith was called into action for Jupiter. The Miracle would take a 2-1 lead with Smith on the mound in the first when Kepler hit a sac fly but the southpaw would keep Jupiter in the game. Smith tossed five shutout innings and struck out seven while allowing just one walk.
Williams was not the only Hammerhead to leave the game with an injury. Flynn injured his leg on a swing in the seventh inning and was replaced by Blake Barber.
Jupiter will look for its first win of the year in the final game of the series against the Miracle. First pitch at Roger Dean Stadium is at 6:35.
