Jonny Mendoza Signs with Harrisburg City Islanders
March 1, 2017 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg City Islanders today announced the addition of midfielder Jonathan "Jonny" Mendoza to the 2017 roster, pending League and Federation approval. Mendoza brings four years of professional experience to the Harrisburg team, having played in the United Soccer League (USL) since 2013.
Mendoza entered the USL as a member of the Orlando City Soccer Club, a former USL club that joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2015. Following his one-year stint with the organization, Mendoza signed with the Rochester Rhinos, another USL franchise in the Eastern Conference. The Colombian footballer was a key piece to the Rhinos' USL title in 2015, as his game tying assist in stoppage time at the 90:38 mark was among the biggest highlights from the match. In 2016, Mendoza returned to the sunshine state to represent the USL's newly formed Orlando City B franchise.
Mendoza was a consistent force in 2016, as he only missed one regular season match. In his 29 appearances, Mendoza amassed 1,596 minutes of action and parlayed his time on the pitch into 5 points on 2 goals and 1 assist. He concluded his regular season with 12 shots including 4 shots on goal. Additionally, Mendoza saw 11 minutes of postseason action for Orlando last season, where he put up 2 shots with 1 on goal.
Mendoza is excited about his move to Harrisburg and looks forward to the 2017 season.
"I'm happy to be in Harrisburg. After they [Harrisburg's management team and technical staff] explained to me where the team is going and the goals for 2017, I became excited and wanted to be a part of the club. I'm looking forward to this season. I met the players already and I'm excited for a new challenge. It is time to focus on making the playoffs and fight for the championship," states Mendoza.
Harrisburg City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher is eager to see what the soccer veteran can bring to the Harrisburg franchise.
"Jonny is a guy who has been in the league for some time now. He won a championship with Rochester in 2015 and we're excited to have him here. We think he can be one of the leaders on this 2017 team," Becher explained.
Jonny Mendoza is the second new signee to the Harrisburg City Islanders this season.
