Jim Coyne named CBA acting commissioner
Published on May 30, 2007 under Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
Albany, NY (May 30, 2007) - In its 62nd season as the longest running professional basketball league in the world, the Continental Basketball Association formally announced today the hiring of Jim Coyne as acting commissioner for its Albany based front office. Due to this hiring, Coyne has formally resigned his position of Vice President and General Manager of the Albany Patroons.
Coyne was instrumental in bringing the Patroons to the Washington Avenue Armory in 1982 as a community-owned, not for profit team. Under his watch as President, the Patroons won two CBA Championships and was named the 1984 CBA Executive of the Year. Coyne had the insight to sign future NBA head coaches Phil Jackson, George Karl and the late Bill Musselman as Patroons head coaches.
In 2004, Coyne assisted in the purchase of the Washington Avenue Armory, the former home of the Patroons, and embarked on an ambitious and successful restoration of the building. Also in 2004, Coyne was a major factor in the revitalization of the Albany Patroons as they rejoined the CBA after a 12-year absence.
"It is a great honor to be selected as the acting commissioner of the CBA," said Coyne. "The CBA is many things to me personally and to be elevated to the highest post is gratifying. I look forward to working with the present ownership groups, which reminds me of the owners that I worked with in the past when the CBA was affiliated with the NBA. They are forward thinking and I see us getting back to those days soon. The future is limitless for the CBA and again it is a great honor to hold the position of acting commissioner."
"I have had the privilege of knowing Jim Coyne for over 20 years and he is a fine choice for acting commissioner," said CBA Executive Committee Chairman Ben Fernandez. "Jim will successfully make the transition from the team to league level and he will do it as always with great dignity and respect from all of the league owners who chose him for this position."
"Jim will do a fine job as our acting commissioner,: stated CBA Executive Committee Vice President Joe Clark. "He has a wealth of knowledge to impart on us as owners and operators of teams in a league which he has long been a part of."
"Jim is an integral part of the history of the CBA," said CBA Director of Operations Dennis Truax. "His knowledge and insight will be valuable to the CBA as me move forward to our 62nd season of play."
"Jim Coyne has been a fixture in the CBA since year 1982. He has seen the league at its highs and lows. Jim will be instrumental in the league office administration, as we focus on our national and international expansion," said CBA Properties CEO and President Ricardo Richardson.
