Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - For the second straight season, the San Jose Giants came to Lancaster early in the season as an "on paper" favorite. But once again the JetHawks refused to play their part. JetHawks ace Chris Hicks outdueled the 2008 California League ERA title winner Tim Alderson as the JetHawks powered their way to an 8-4 victory Monday night at the Hangar.
While he was constantly in trouble, Hicks never showed signs of panicking. Despite allowing a career-high 12 hits, Hicks gave his team a solid six and 1/3 innings of work, pitching into the seventh inning while allowing only four runs.
The lead was traded back and forth early. Lancaster struck in the opening frame on a walk to J.B. Shuck, a stolen base, and a pair of ground outs. San Jose pulled in front in the fourth inning, but a Jason Castro home run tied it. David Flores gave Lancaster its second lead with a RBI single in the fourth inning and the JetHawks went in front for good when T.J. Steele hit his first home run of the year, a two-run blast in the fifth inning.
After Hicks left the game in the seventh inning, relief star Chia-Jen Lo came in for his first professional save opportunity. He retired the first five batters he faced before getting into a jam in the ninth inning. A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases and brought up the leading RBI producer in the Cal League, Buster Posey. But Lo induced a fly ball to right field to end the inning and earn his first save.
Several JetHawks continued their hot streaks at the plate. J.B. Shuck had three hits to extend his hit streak to eleven games. T.J. Steele had his first two-hit game of the season and Jason Castro had two hits, the fourth straight time he's had at least two hits in a game. Brian Pellegrini and David Flores each had two hits as well.
The JetHawks will try to make it back-to-back wins over the Giants Tuesday night as they face one of the top young pitchers in the game, San Jose left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner has mowed down Cal League hitters this year, going 3-0 with an ERA of just 0.56. The JetHawks counter with a prospect of their own, David Duncan (0-3). The radio broadcast of the game on Magic 1340 and online at www.JetHawks.com begins with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45.
It will be a Deuces Wild Tuesday at the Hangar. The JetHawks will offer concession specials, including $2 beer. Lucky fans will also have a chance to play the newest game at JetHawks Tuesday night games this year for a chance to win $40,000
