JetHawks Crack Quakes, End Win Streak
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - The JetHawks turned Rancho Cucamonga's historic 15-game win streak into history with a 6-2 win over the Quakes on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field. The streak was the longest in the franchise's history.
Lancaster (12-9, 45-46) received a quality start from Ty Culbreth (5-3) and scored five of their six runs with two outs in the streak-snapping victory.
Tyler Nevin scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a Joel Diaz two-out double. Nevin had reached on a single and stolen second base before coming home.
Nevin followed a Colton Welker sac-fly in the third inning with a RBI-double of his own to put Lancaster up, 3-0.
The Quakes (18-3, 53-38) responded with runs in the third and fourth innings to get back within a run. Connor Wong accounted for the second run with a solo shot off Culbreth.
Culbreth settled in after the fourth inning and did not allow another run in the start. He gave up the two runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. Austin Hamilton (1-1) pitched four innings in his first professional start and took the loss for Rancho.
The JetHawks created some breathing room with a three-run fifth inning. Ryan Moseley entered in relief and struggled with his command, walking three in the frame. With two outs, he walked Nevin to load the bases and issued a free pass to Vince Fernandez to force home a run. Wes Rogers followed with a two-run double to put the JetHawks up, 6-2.
Ben Bowden entered with two runners on the seventh for Culbreth and, after walking the first batter he faced, struck out Cody Thomas and Omar Estevez to leave the bases loaded. Bowden tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, and Justin Lawrence followed with a scoreless ninth to lock up the win.
Carlos Herrera went 2-for-4 in the game to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Welker finished 0-for-4 to snap his hit streak at 13.
The four-game series wraps up on Thursday at LoanMart Field. The Quakes will send Dustin May (5-3) to the mound. The JetHawks have yet to announce their starter. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
