JetHawks Battle Again But Fall to Quakes in Series Finale

(LANCASTER, CA) Several times during Sunday's game at the Hangar, the Lancaster JetHawks could have easily given up on their quest for the first three-game winning streak in their 2009 season. Each of those times, the JetHawks displayed what has become a hallmark of this year's team - an unwillingness to yield. In the end, however, after three valiant comeback attempts, the JetHawks came up short and fell to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, 12-9.
The fans who spent their Sunday evening at the ballpark were treated to an action-packed ballgame, with drama on the field of play and off. The game featured 32 hits, 21 runs and an ejection of pitching coach Don Alexander.
Alexander was tossed from the game after arguing what appeared to be a highly questionable call - and one that changed the tenor of the game. In the fifth inning, with the bases loaded in a one-run game, Sergio Severino appeared to strike out P.J. Phillips to end the inning. The pitch was called a ball, and Phillips lined the next pitch off the wall in left for a bases-clearing double.
The JetHawks did not go quietly into the night after Phillips' back-breaker, however. Lancaster scored three runs of its own in the fifth, and added one more in the sixth on a towering home run by Jason Castro. It was Castro's second long ball of the year. Chris Jackson had his first big night at the plate, collecting three hits and driving in two runs with a bases loaded single in the fourth.
Lancaster loaded the bases in the ninth, and fans may have flashed back to the ninth-inning heroics of Friday night. This time it was not to be, as the JetHawks left the tying runs on base when Craig Corrado was called out on strikes.
The JetHawks return to the Hangar tomorrow night to face the San Jose Giants at 7 PM. Righthander Chris Hicks (2-1, 3.07) will look for his first win against RHP Tim Alderson (0-0, 3.14). The radio broadcast on Magic 1340 and JetHawks.com will begin with the Pre-Game show at 6:45.
