April 6, 2008 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Jose Stealth News Release
A precious playoff seeding will have to wait for the San Jose Stealth. The team lost at HP Pavilion to the Portland LumberJax after beating them in Portland less than 24 hours earlier. The Stealth lost to Portland for the first time in two years, 12-10. The Stealth now move to 7-6 on the year and will have to wait for another day to secure a playoff spot. The Stealth play the Edmonton Rush at HP next Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
FIRST QUARTER
Portland scored a pair of quick goals in the first six minutes of the game. Forward Ryan Powell fired a shot top shelf that squeaked by goalie Anthony Cosmo. A few minutes later, Cory Conway sniped a shot through a maze of players that Cosmo never saw. Frank Resetarits saved the Stealth from a shutout in the quarter after receiving a crisp pass from Jeff Zywicki that Resetarits deposited into the net from close range.
SECOND QUARTER
Dan Dawson and Scott Stewart scored within six seconds of each other to maintain Portland's two-goal lead. Those goals were sandwiched between two highlight-reel goals from athletic Stealth forward Jeff Zywicki. On the first one, Portland goalie Matt Disher lost track of Zywicki behind the goal and the assistant team captain dove behind Disher to drop the ball into the net.
Zywicki then stretched for a long pass and Eric Martin and lost the ball in front of the net. With the ball loose in front of the goal, Zywicki fired a hard ground ball past Disher for an amazing goal.
The Stealth had abundant power-play opportunities towards the end of that quarter including a two-man advantage but they couldn't convert until the end of the quarter when Gary Rosyski scored on a man-up situation. The teams went to half-time tied at 5.
THIRD QUARTER
Gary Rosyski started a two-goal run that allowed San Jose to take the lead, with both goals scored on power plays. Portland answered with a pair of power-play goals of their own to tie the score at 7, under sketchy circumstances. The Stealth was called for illegal subsitution after defensemen Kyle Sorenson crunched into the boards. The dazed Sorenson tried to crawl to the bench and that's when the Stealth put an extra man on the floor, which cost the Stealth a goal on the power play.
Powell scored a hat-trick goal to break the tie. Powell thundered down the middle and split Cosmo's tending for the go-ahead goal. Brodie Merrill scored on a breakaway for the LumberJax's fourth-straight goal put them up 9-7 at the end of three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER
The period began with two LumberJax in the penalty box, the Stealth narrowed the score to 9-8 with a stinging shot from Cam Sedgwick.
Kyle Sorensen went down for the second straight time after taking a shot to the head and needed assistance off the floor. Portland went two men up after goalie Anthony Cosmo was flagged for slashing. Paul Dawson found the net to put the LumberJax up by two goals, and they went up by three shortly afterwards when a Stealth defender went down, and the towering Peter Morgan scored a goal from up top.
Sorenson's game got much better after he scored a goal with under two minutes left to get the Stealth within a goal at 11-10. But the Stealth got no closer, despite two desperate possessions.
