JackHammers Right-Hander Nate Sevier Tosses the 11th No-Hitter in Northern League History

JOLIET, IL- Joliet JackHammers pitcher Nate Sevier (11-3) twirled the 11th no-hitter in Northern League history by pitching seven scoreless innings to help the Joliet JackHammers to a 3-0 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 4,673 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night. The JackHammers played a doubleheader against the RailCats on Saturday and lost game one 4-2 before Sevier took the mound in game two and tossed the first no-hitter since August 6, 2005 when former JackHammers pitcher Luis Villarreal pitched a nine-inning no-hitter in a 3-0 win against the Kansas City T-Bones at Silver Cross Field. It was the fifth seven-inning no-hitter in Northern League history.

Sevier allowed three base runners on Saturday night. Jay Pecci (0-2) was hit by a pitch and Tanner Townsend (0-3) reached base on an error in the first inning. Mike Reese (0-1) led off the sixth inning with a walk. The Salinas, California native retired 14 consecutive hitters from the end of the first inning to the start of the sixth inning where Reese reached base. The JackHammers promptly turned a double play and ended the sixth inning.

Sevier struck out two of the three men he faced in the ninth inning. He struck out Townsend and Steve Haake (0-3) before inducing a pop out to Cory Harris in center field for the final out of the game.

The JackHammers provided enough run support for Sevier by scoring two early runs against RailCats right-hander Travis Kerber (6-6). Cory Harris (2-2) led off the first inning with a walk and went to second base on a single by Juan Diaz (2-3). Derek Nicholson (0-3) reached first base on a fielder's choice to move Harris to third base.

Chad Ehrnsberger (1-3) hit a two-run double to score Harris and Nicholson and make it 2-0 in favor of the JackHammers.

Harris added a solo home run in the fifth inning to make it 3-0.

In game one of the doubleheader, the JackHammers and RailCats resumed the suspended game from August 5 in the top of the fifth inning in a scoreless tie. Brett Wallace (1-3) led off the game for Gary with a single and went to second base on a groundout by Dale Mueller (1-4) .

David Detienne (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Wallace and make it 1-0 in favor of the RailCats.

Detienne moved to second base on the throw. After Eric McNamee (2-4) grounded out, Tanner Townsend (2-5) hit an RBI double to score Detienne and give Gary a 2-0 lead.

The JackHammers scored one run in the sixth inning to cut the Gary lead in half. Eric Scriven (2-3) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a throwing error by RailCats shortstop Eric Blakely. Tim Hutting (1-4) grounded out to move Scriven to third base.

Derek Nicholson (1-3) hit a sacrifice fly to score Scriven and make it 2-1.

The RailCats scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to make it a 4-1 lead. Mike Reese (1-4) reached base with a one-out single and went to second base when Jose Yepez (0-3) reached first base on an error by JackHammers third baseman Chad Ehrnsberger.

Jermaine Allensworth (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Reese and Dale Mueller followed with an RBI single to score Yepez and make it 4-1.

Steve Edsall (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. James Garcia (0-2) pitched four and one-thirds innings and suffered the loss. He allowed four runs, (two earned runs), on seven hits.
