New Jersey Ironmen News Release
Newark, N.J. (Thursday, September 25, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen staff looks to continue their soccer tour through New Jersey on Friday, October 3, when they travel to Jackson to play the local city police department in a friendly exhibition. Following a 7:00 p.m. boy's varsity high school soccer match between Jackson Memorial and Lacey Township, the maroon and mandarin will hit the field at the Jackson Justice Complex to take on the men in blue.
This exhibition marks the latest in a series of competitions for the Ironmen staff. The team reached the finals this past June in an indoor tournament created by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. Funds from that tournament were used to benefit the Jerramiah T. Healy Charitable Foundation for A Better Jersey City, a non-profit organization committed to providing aid and assistance for Jersey City families, individuals and organizations of limited financial means.
The last time the staff laced up their boots was in August for the Graeme Preston Memorial Soccer Marathon in Freehold. The Graeme Preston Memorial Soccer Marathon was created by 15-year-old Mia O'Brien as her Girl Scout Silver Award Project. She developed the marathon concept as a way to honor the life of Graeme Preston, a former classmate of hers that tragically passed away following an automobile accident this past March. All of the proceeds raised were given to the Graeme Preston Foundation for Life, a charitable fund created by the Prestons to assists families that may face such circumstances as they did.
The Ironmen will also be hosting the inaugural XTremBol street soccer tournament this Sunday at Prudential Center. Beginning at 9AM, 12 teams will battle it out for the XTremBol crown in the arena parking lot located on the corner of Lafeyette and Broad Street. XTremBol bills itself as a combination of street soccer, music and culture. Their brand is played with a low-bounce ball to increase the speed of the match, requiring players to emphasize pinpoint accuracy in shots and passes. The uniqueness of their game comes in that play will be conducted in closed cages, and the XTremBol goals stand 42" X 30" with no goalkeepers in net. Matches will be 4v4, and the tournament looks to run over a 12-hour span.
The New Jersey Ironmen are currently seeking members for their official kids club. Those interested in joining can click here to download our registration form. You can either fax in the sheet to 973-757-6302 or mail it to the New Jersey Ironmen Kids Club, Prudential Center, 165 Mulberry Street, Newark, NJ 07102.
