New Jersey Ironmen News Release
Newark, N.J. (Monday, September 8, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen will hit the baseball diamond once again next Thursday, September 18, in support of the Newark Bears Soccer Night. In an evening focused upon the beautiful game, the defending Atlantic League Champion Bears will be hosting the Somerset Patriots with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium.
"It's good to see a team in the same market supporting soccer, and we are glad to do the same in return," Ironmen Head Coach Omid Namazi commented. "If both of our teams continue to support each other, it will only bring success to both of our organizations."
Throughout the evening, there will be soccer-themed activities and on-field promotions at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Ironmen staff and dance team will join IronDog in supporting the Bears, and Head Coach Namazi will be on hand to sign autographs for fans in attendance. Some good baseball will also be played when the finalists of last year's championship series square off against one another.
The original Newark Bears played in the International League from 1926 to 1949, and they played their home games at the former Ruppert Stadium in the Ironbound section of Newark. The newest Bears club was formed in 1998 by former New York Yankees catcher Rick Cerone, a Newark native. Over the years, the Bears have attracted such notable players as José Canseco (2001), Ozzie Canseco (2000, 2001) and Jose Lima (2003). Former MLB All-Star Rickey Henderson played the first half of the 2003 season with the Bears and was named the MVP in the Atlantic League All-Star Game that year. He was subsequently signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers before returning to the Bears in 2004.
This game will mark the fourth Soccer Night that the Ironmen have supported over the past few months. The team fulfilled invitations to the Lakewood Blue Claws and New Jersey Jackals earlier this summer, and they will also be on hand for Soccer Night with the Somerset Patriots on Monday, September 15.
