New Jersey Ironmen News Release
Newark, N.J. (Friday, June 13, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen will team up with the Lakewood Blue Claws next Thursday, June 19, as part of Soccer Night at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood. The Blue Claws will play host to the Lake County Captains with the first pitch being thrown at 7:05 PM, and Ironmen goalkeeper Tony Meola is scheduled to get it all started in a homerun derby for charity at 6:30 PM.
Along with Meola and his teammates, the Ironmen Dance Team will also be on hand for the evening. Throughout the night, the Blue Claws will be conducting soccer-related promotions with the Soccer Post serving as the sponsor of the night's festivities.
In addition to the accomplishments that he has achieved on the soccer field, Meola also excelled at baseball. He was an All-State baseball player at Kearny High School, leading to a baseball scholarship (along with his soccer scholarship) to the University of Virginia. He was a varsity letterman on the diamond for the Cavaliers and was also drafted by the New York Yankees.
The Lakewood BlueClaws are a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies, and they play in the Class A South Atlantic League. They moved to their home field at FirstEnergy Park in 2001. The most notable alumnus of the Blue Claws is current Phillie first baseman Ryan Howard, the 2005 National League Rookie of the Year and 2006 National League Most Valuable Player.
Anyone interested in buying group tickets for Soccer Night can contact Bill Kemp, Blue Claws Group Sales Manager, at (732) 901-7000 ext. 160.
