International League Names Players of the Week

Published on July 9, 2018 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Columbus catcher Eric Haase and Gwinnett right- handed starter Lucas Sims have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from July 2-8. Haase's honor gives the Clippers an IL-best five weekly awards this season, while Sims is the third member of the Stripers to be so honored. This marks the second time in his career Sims has been named IL Pitcher of the Week (April 17-23, 2017).

ERIC HAASE, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Eric Haase hit .346 over the past week, leading the International League with six extra-base hits and four doubles while finishing near the top of the circuit with seven runs scored (T-2nd ) and eight RBI (T-3rd). He collected multiple hits in four different games this week, producing at least one extra-base hit each time. Over the weekend, Haase clubbed a pair of home runs to bring his total on the season to nine. Haase has been named to the International League All-Star Team and will represent Columbus on Wednesday in his home ballpark at the 2018 Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan.

25-year-old Eric Haase is in his eighth season as a professional player. He was selected by Cleveland in the 7th round of the 2011 draft. This is his first full season playing above the Double-A level; he has yet to make his Major League debut. Haase is a native of Westland, Michigan.

LUCAS SIMS, Gwinnett Stripers IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Gwinnett's homegrown ace deserved a better fate this week, as Lucas Sims led the International League with 14.0 innings pitched and 19 strikeouts but did not earn a victory in either of his two starts. In back-to-back outings he delivered 7.0 scoreless innings of two-hit baseball without allowing a walk and departed with a lead, only to see it surrendered by the Stripers bullpen. Sims lowered his ERA on the year to 2.04, which would be low enough for 2nd in the IL if he had enough innings pitched with Gwinnett to qualify.

24-year-old Lucas Sims is in his seventh season as a professional pitcher after being selected by Atlanta in the 1st round of the 2012 draft. He made his Major League debut for the Braves last season and overall has a record of 3-6 in 20 big league appearances so far in his career. Sims is a native of Lawrenceville, Georgia.
