Inter Miami CF II earned a 2-2 draw on the road against New York City FC II on Sunday night. It was the hosts, however, who claimed the additional point following a shootout from the spot.Second half substitute Shanyder Borgelin scored the team's goals in the match.
After its bye week last weekend, Inter Miami CF II lined up with CJ dos Santos in goal; Tyler Hall, Abel Caputo and Modesto Mendez formed a back three; Logan Batiste, Lawson Sunderland, David Ruiz and Noah Allen started in midfield; Tyler Bagley and Romeo Beckham played behind striker Shaan Hundal in attack.
It was the hosts that opened the scoring, with defender Stephen Turnbull latching onto a long ball from Nicholas Benalcazar before sending the ball into the back of the net with a shot over the onrushing dos Santos in the 17th minute to give New York City FC II the lead.
Despite both team's efforts in attack, the match went into the half with the 1-0 lead intact for the hosts. Then, in the 63rd minute, New York struck again. Midfielder Andres Jasson received a ball from Christopher Gloster inside the box before finishing with a right-footed curved shot to the second post to put the 2-0 on the scoresheet.
Inter Miami then made several substitutions, with Borgelin's introduction being key for the team. The Haitian striker came onto the pitch in the 59th minute and had an instant impact, cutting the deficit in half the 66th minute. The forward was assisted by Allen after the left back rushed into the opposition's half, with Borgelin neatly finishing with a right-footed shot to put the team back into the match. The goal was Borgelin's seventh of the season, marking the fourth straight match scoring after coming off the bench for the attacker. Additionally, the assist was Allen's second in 2022.
Three minutes later, Borgelin found a cross from Hundal inside the box to tie the proceedings 2-2 in the 69th minute. The goal was Borgelin's eighth of the campaign, while the assist was Hundal's third.
The scoreboard didn't move throughout the remainder of the match, but it was New York City FC II that took the additional point following a penalty shootout.
Inter Miami CF II will be back in action next Sunday, July 31, when it visits NKU Stadium to take on FC Cincinnati 2.
