Idaho's Bailey named CBA's top rookie

March 10, 2004 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

Boise, ID (March 10, 2004) — The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Idaho Stampede guard David Bailey was named the 2003-04 Rookie of the Year, as voted on by CBA head coaches. Bailey will be presented with the Michael Adams Award during halftime of Wednesday night's playoff game between the Stampede and the Gary Steelheads at the Idaho Center in Nampa, ID.

"What he brings to our team is similar to what Jemeil Rich brings to the Gary Steelheads," remarked Stampede Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak, whose team is currently up 1-0 over Gary in the first round of the 2004 CBA Playoffs. "He is a guy who is extremely quick and, pound for pound, he is one of the tougher players in our league to contain. He is my kind of guy."

Bailey, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound guard out of Loyola-Chicago averaged 12.9 points, 7.5 assists (3rd in the league), 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game while playing in all 48 games for the Stampede during the season. As Idaho's sixth-round draft selection (39th overall), he led all rookies in minutes played (1,383), as well as assists (358). He also led the Stampede in steals with 70, while shooting 53.7 percent (225 of 419) from the floor, and 79.7 percent (145 of 182) from the free-throw line.

In the final eight games of the season, Bailey led the Stampede in scoring on three different occasions, and was the high man in assists in all eight contests. During that stretch, he averaged 21.4 points and 13.9 assists per game, while recording a triple-double on February 21 with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.

Dakota Wizards guard Melvin Sanders finished second in the voting. To be eligible, players must have played in 24 (1/2 of the 48 game schedule) games, must be in good standing with the CBA, and must have been eligible for the 2003 CBA College Draft. Coaches could not vote for their own players.
