November 13, 2003 - National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release

Nashville, TN- Ickey Woods, the former star Cincinnati Bengal running back has been named the Head Coach of the Cincinnati Sizzle women's football team.

In his rookie season with the Bengals, Woods rushed for 1,066 yards and 15 touchdowns. He spent 4 seasons with Cincinnati (1988-'91) where in addition to being a great running back, he created quite a buzz with his post touchdown dance, the 'Ickey Shuffle.' "We have several former NFL players coaching in our league including former Rams QB, Roman Gabriel. Adding someone with credentials like Ickey Woods to our league is only going to make our players learn the game quicker and better, " states Debby Lening, VP, NWFA.

Woods becoming the Head Coach of the Cincinnati Sizzle was a no brainer. His wife Chandra tried out for the Sizzle on Nov. 11. "I was so nervous that I told Ickey he couldn't come to the tryouts," states Chandra. "Now he's my coach!"

The league is now seeking an owner for the team. "I have spoken with several people that are interested in owning the team," states Debby Lening, VP NWFA. "We want to make sure that we get the right person as team owner. We (NWFA) will work with Coach Woods on running the team until we find an owner.. We would like to have the owner in place soon so that this team can start preparing for exhibition games," adds Lening.

Tryouts for the Cincinnati Sizzle will be held on November 22nd at the Fairfield Youth Athletic Association Filed in Fairfield, OH. Registration begins at 10:00m. All participants must be at least 18 and have their own health insurance. There is a one time $35.00 try out fee. Anyone interested in playing, coaching or owning the team should attend.

The NWFA is the largest tackle football league in the world with 37 teams in 23 states. The league wrapped up its 2003 season with the National Women's Football Championship Game that was held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville in front of 5,726 fans.
