IceHogs win Colonial Cup championship

May 24, 2007 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The Rockford IceHogs held on to win Game Seven of the United Hockey League (UHL) 2007 Colonial Cup Finals to capture the league championship. Winning their ninth-consecutive home game in the 2007 postseason, the IceHogs registered a 3-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings to win the best-of-seven series 4-3.

Less than three minutes into the first period, Rockford's Kevin Ulanski tallied an unassisted shorthanded goal to give the IceHogs and early 1-0 lead. Kalamazoo tied the game later in the period on a power play goal by Nick Bootland. Assists were credited to Tyler Willis and Glenn Detulleo on the play. Both teams headed into the first intermission with one goal even though Rockford out-shot Kalamazoo 13-9 in the frame.

The eventual game-winning goal was scored by Jason Notermann at 6:11 in the second period off a pass from Matt Gens. The K-Wings attempted to rally to tie the game, but they were unable to put the puck past goaltender Frederic Cloutier in the final 34 minutes of the contest. Cloutier made 24 saves and improved his postseason goals against average to 2.31, the best in the UHL in 2007.

A late goal at 18:27 of the third period by Nicolas Corbeil from Chaz Johnson and Nathan Lutz set the game's final margin at 3-1.

Ulanski was named the B2 Networks Colonial Cup Playoff Most Valuable Player. In addition to scoring a goal in Game Seven of the Finals, he led Rockford with 21 points (8g, 11a) during their playoff run.

Kalamazoo goaltender Ryan Nie made 29 saves in the loss. Rockford finished the night 0-5 on the power play, while the K-Wings were 1-4.
