IBL welcomes Oregon Wave

February 22, 2009 - International Basketball League (IBL) News Release

Portland, Oregon-the International Basketball League announces today that it is accepting Beaverton Oregon as a new market for an IBL team. Games are going to be played at the Beaverton Hoop YMCA. The previous owner of the Portland territory was Terry Emmert who did not return to the IBL; thus, opening up the Portland area market for a Beaverton team.

IBL Commissioner Mikal Duilio on a Beaverton team playing out of the Beaverton Hoop facility: "Our product is so efficient that we do not need 3,000 fans per night behind it to survive; that being said, we would like a decent amount of fans at the games and we feel that YMCA and their new building-the Beaverton Hoop offers a great opportunity to build a fan base". For an IBL team to work in a particular community- there has to be interest from the media, from potential fans, a venue and sponsors but recently, the IBL has focused on venue partnership as particularly important.

About majority owner Terrance Dickens-in 2005, Terrance Dickens started the Vancouver Volcanoes with IBL Commissioner Mikal Duilio; they sold the team after the two seasons to current owner Bryan Hunter of Vancouver Washington. The Volcanoes are now heading into their fifth year of existence (2009) having completed a great 2008 season wining 18 games and losing only 7 games. Dickens also has a two-year history as a head coach for the Portland Chinooks where his 2007 Chinooks (owned by Terry Emmert) went to the IBL Championship and lost 113-109 to the Elkhart Express in front of 3,300 fans (video of this game is found on the IBL web site-main page-scroll to video called ‘Elkhart wins').

Vision for the Wave: Although the Wave will have support from YMCA and Beaverton Hoop basketball community, the Oregon Wave would like to have a statewide identity. Dickens vision for the Oregon Wave roster is a collection of some of the top players from the various Oregon universities. Building on the statewide theme, owner Terrance Dickens plans to build his team as a tour team as well-playing games in various cities such as Medford, Coos Bay, Pendleton and Lincoln City.

Anticipated roster: - 6' 9" Forward David Lucas -- from Oregon State University - Lucas led the IBL in scoring the last two seasons with an average of 37 points per contest. The former Tigard High School star was a two-time All-PAC 10 performer for the Beavers (2004/2005) before moving on to a professional career. - 6' 4" Guard David Jackson- David played and continues to play at the highest level professionally. Here is a link to highlights of a recent Korean basketball league championship game where David had 44 points (30 in the 2nd half)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tejH-5sydjc - 6' 4" Point Guard Robert Day-a star at Western Oregon and a professional player for the last 5 years. - Dickens is looking to carry a few other locally known names as well including a few more Oregon State players-6' 3" Guard Lamar Hurd (2006) and possibly 6' 4" Guard Chris Stephens (2006).
