Baycats and Royals Remain in Tie for 3rd Place
In Burlington, the Guelph Royals won their third straight game with a 5-3 decision over the Burlington Twins and stay in a third-place tie with the Barrie Baycats in one of three IBL games on Thursday night. The Royals and Baycats are now tied at 19-15.
Guelph scored three runs in the eighth inning, behind Sean Reilly's two-run home run and Kevin Treichel's run-scoring double, to overcome a 3-2 deficit for the win.
Mark Allen added two hits including a double and an RBI while Nathan Grant also drove in a run with a double in the first inning.
Kyle Morton led Burlington with a two-run double in the first to tie the score at 2-2 before Matt Romanin's run-scoring single in the 7th gave Burlington a short-lived 3-2 lead.
Chris Nagorski (1-2) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Adam Reynolds. Nagorski pitched 2 1/3 innings striking out three and walking two while allowing no runs and no hits. Reynolds went 6 2/3, giving up three runs, only one earned, on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Matt St. Kitts was the loser for Burlington, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings. He struckout nine before being relieved by Aaron Boag who finished up.
BARRIE 6, TORONTO 2
In Barrie, the Baycats defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 behind the three hit pitching of Nick Fogarty. Fogarty (4-1) went seven innings, allowing only two runs on three walks and four strikeouts. He was relieved by Jamie Arneson and J.D. Moore who each went an inning to finish up.
The Baycats scored three runs in the third and three again in the seventh to make a loser of Toronto starter Marek Deska (8-2). Ryan Spataro with an RBI double, an RBI ground-out by Jordan Lundberg and an RBI single by Jeff Cowan put the first three Barrie runs on the board in the 3rd inning. Mike Reeves two-run single and a wild pitch by Deska scored the final three runs in the eighth. Reeves, Spataro and Cowan each had two hits on the night for Barrie.
Aaron Guinn's solo lead-off home run in the second inning gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead. The Leafs scored their second run in the fifth inning to close-in 3-2 on Branfy Arias' RBI groundout.
Deska gave up 11 hits along with five walks and six strikeouts and all six runs, all earned. Luke Melymick pitched the final inning for Toronto, allowing one hit and one walk.
KITCHENER 8, HAMILTON 4
In Kitchener, the Panthers moved one game behind fifth-place Toronto with an 8-4 win over the Hamilton Cardinals. The Cardinals are last in the standings with a 5-27 record.
Iggy Villalobos the Panthers with three hits and an RBI while Rick Murray added two hits. Brian Burton and Mitch Delaney each had a hit and two RBI's to lead Kitchener's nine-hit attack.
Dan Jagdeo had two hits including a solo home run for the Cardinals. Jonathan Solazzo, Jon Saporsantos, Anthony Rizquez and Andrew Jacinto each added two hits with Ryan Taylor adding a two-run double. Rizquez also added an RBI.
Adam Echlin (3-1) was the winning pitcher, going six innings allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and no walks with 11 strikeouts. Matt Vickers, Ryan Schwenn and Mike White each hurled one inning in relief.
Tim Black (1-6) took the loss for the Cardinals. He went six innings, allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Benson Merritt and Jon Volpato finished up the final two innings.
