Jason Coker scored on a wild pitch in the tenth inning as the Ottawa Fat Cats picked up their third straight win, a 5-4 victory over the Barrie Baycats in one of three games played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Thursday night.
After trailing 2-0, the Fat Cats scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, then added two more runs in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Baycats tied the game in the bottom of the eighth to send the game to extras, where it ended relatively quickly.
Josh Soffer earned the win for the Fat Cats, who improved to .500 on the year with a 9-9 mark. Soffer came on in the eighth inning and allowed four hits with one strikeout over two scoreless innings. Brandon Huffman picked up the save, hurling three strikeouts in the bottom of the tenth inning.
What makes the win maybe most impressive for the Fat Cats is that they managed the victory with just four hits on the night. Two of those hits were home runs by Coker and LaDale Hayes, who each finished the night with two RBI and a run scored. Huffman singled and scored a run while Cody Mombourquette had the other Ottawa hit.
Scott Kelly was the losing pitcher, allowing the lone run in the tenth inning while issuing a strikeout and a walk over one inning pitched.
The Baycats (11-6) combined for ten hits, including a double and a home run by Kyle DeGrace, who finished with two runs scored and an RBI. Jonathan Waltenbury singled and doubled while Jeff Cowan notched a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss. Sean Travers and Matt Proctor each had a hit and an RBI while Kevin Atkinson singled and scored a run.
Burlington Twins 9; Guelph Royals 7
In Burlington, Darryl Pui's three run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to make all the difference, as the Twins snapped a three game losing skid with a 9-7 win over the visiting Guelph Royals.
Alex Gale was the winning pitcher, coming on to replace starter Ryan Noack in the sixth inning and allowing just one hit and one earned run with one walk over 1 2/3 total innings pitched. Kurtis Robinson pitched the final two innings and picked up the save, giving up just one hit and striking out one.
Despite making four errors on the night, the Twins (5-9) held on for victory by way of their 12 hits, two in total from Pui who also singled and finished with four RBI and a run scored. Branson Joseph doubled and homered, scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Peter Bako singled, doubled and scored a run while Jeff Kosta had a pair of hits and also came into score. Jamie Lekas, Greg Densem and Ryan Asis each had a hit and a run scored and Phillip Steer rounded out the Twins offence with a hit and an RBI.
Starter Chris Nagorski suffered the loss for Guelph (8-9), allowing 12 hits and nine earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Steve Coates had a three hit night with two RBI and two runs scored for Guelph, while Frankie Hare also had three hits with an RBI. Kevin Treichel singled twice, drove in a run and came in to score while Mark Allen singled and added an RBI with a run scored. Josh Garton doubled and scored a run in the loss.
London Majors 10; Kitchener Panthers 7
In Kitchener, Chris Chambers' three run home run in the eighth inning broke a 7-7 tie as the visiting London Majors came away with a 10-7 victory over the Panthers at Jack Couch Park.
Starter Eric Cordova pitched five innings for the Majors but it was reliever Mike Henry who earned the win, allowing four hits and just one earned run with one walk and an impressive nine strikeouts over the final four innings.
Chambers' home run was his only hit of the night, but it served as a big one as it keyed the Majors (9-5) to their fifth win in their last six games. Chris Stewart also homered in the win, finishing the night with two RBI and two runs scored. Adwin Springer doubled twice and drove in three runs with a run scored, and Paul LaMantia doubled and singled, driving in a pair and scoring one. Byron Reichstein rounded things out for the Majors with a pair of hits and a run scored.
Adam Lentz was the third of four Kitchener pitchers and suffered the loss, allowing two hits and three earned runs with one walk and one strikeout over one inning pitched.
The Panthers outhit the Majors 10-9 and watched the visitors make five errors on the night, but couldn't capitalize as they saw their record slip to 7-7. Of their ten hits, Mitch Delaney accounted for three, including a home run and a pair of singles, driving in two runs and scoring once. Luke Baker singled, doubled and scored a run while Mike Glinka singled and drove in a pair of runs. Iggy Villalobos had a pair of hits with two runs scored, while Mike Winter doubled in the loss.
