Toronto Maple Leafs 8; Barrie Baycats 2

Marek Deska pitched seven solid innings and was backed up by a 14-hit attack as the Toronto Maple Leafs broke out of their early season funk in a big way, downing the host Barrie Baycats 8-2 in one of four games played in the Intercounty Baseball League on Thursday night.

Toronto (3-4) has struggled at times so far this season, but Deska hasn't. The veteran right-hander improved to 2-0 with yet another quality start, scattering six hits and allowing two runs while striking out two and walking one. Barrie slipped to 5-2 with the loss.

Clay Caulfield added two shutout innings for the Leafs, allowing just two hits and a walk, and the Leafs made it easy for them both by scoring five runs in the second inning to give them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Glenn Jackson's three-run homer sparked the big second inning off Barrie starter and loser CJ Machete, who lasted just three innings. Machete allowed six runs on seven hits and three strikeouts. Rob Gillis also homered, had three hits and drove in three more for the Leafs, while Jackson had two hits in the game. Tyler Fata added two hits and an RBI and Damon Topolie also had two hits for the Leafs, who had at least one hit from every player in the lineup in posting their best offensive showing of the season. Matt Richardson had three hits for the Baycats, who managed eight hits. Phil Dedrick added two hits and an RBI for Barrie, while Ryan Spataro drove in the other run for the losers.

Brantford Red Sox 8; Burlington Twins 3

In Burlington, the Brantford Red Sox stretched their undefeated streak to begin the season to six games as they downed the Burlington Twins 8-3 at Nelson Park.

Starter Nathan Forer earned the win for the Red Sox, allowing just three hits and three runs - two earned - with six walks and two strikeouts over five innings pitched. Three others wrapped things up on the mound for Brantford, combining to allow just two more hits while dishing five strikeouts.

Terrell Alliman led the Red Sox at the plate with a single and two homers, finishing the night with two run scored and two RBI. Josh McCurdy also homered and added a single with a run scored and three RBI in the win. Scott Thorman singled and homered with a run scored and two RBI, while Wayne Forman chipped in with a single, double and two runs scored. Jason Gotwalt and Dwayne Bailey each doubled and came in to score for the visitors.

Burlington burned through seven pitchers on the night, but the loss was handed to starter Tyler Wilson, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings and surrendered five hits and five earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Twins (1-6) managed just five hits on the night, which came from five different players in the lineup. Phillip Steer and Adam Cholewka each had an RBI single while Jeff Kosta and Zach Fernandez both singled and scored a run. Alex Ciernik rounded out the Burlington offence with a single.

Guelph Royals 9; Kitchener Panthers 3

In Kitchener, the Guelph Royals scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never surrendered their lead, dropping the Kitchener Panthers 9-3 at Jack Couch Park.

Starter Adam Reynolds earned the win for the Royals (4-3), allowing five hits and three runs - none earned - with one walk and four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings pitched. Ryan Greco was the third Guelph pitcher and picked up the save, allowing just one hit with two walks and three strikeouts over the final two innings.

The Royals smashed 13 hits, but were also guilty of five errors on the night. Frankie Hare led the way for Guelph with a home run, two singles, two RBI with two runs scored, while Jeremy Ware also had three hits and one RBI with a run scored. Sean Reilly notched a two run homer and Josh Garton singled twice while Tyler Wheeler doubled and drove in three runs.

Starter Adam Echlin suffered the loss for the Panthers (4-2), giving up ten hits and five earned runs over seven innings pitched.

Mike Winter had two of Kitchener's six hits on the night, while Mat Taube doubled and scored a run. Rick Murray had a single and two RBI, while Jeff Pietraszko and Pete Molloy chipped in with the other Kitchener hits.

London Majors 3; Hamilton Cardinals 2

In London, Byron Reichstein's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to score Ronando DeLosSantos turned out to be the difference, as the London Majors held on to drop the visiting Hamilton Cardinals 3-2 from Labatt Park.

Starter Eric Cordova earned the win for the Majors (3-3), giving up seven hits and two earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. Chris Chambers came on to register the final out of the eighth inning before Mike Henry closed things out in the ninth inning, striking out two and picking up the save.

Chambers also made an appearance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a single, double and a run scored in the win. Tyler Graham and Cleveland Brownlee each singled twice and scored once, while Reichstein added another single and a run scored two his fourth inning RBI single. DeLosSantos rounded out the Majors ten-hit attack with a single.

Matt Martinow was dealt the loss, starting and allowing eight hits and three earned runs with two walks and one strikeout over five innings pitched.

Jon Saporsantos singled, doubled, drove in a run and came in to score for the Cardinals (1-4), while Johnathan Solazzo also had a pair of hits and the other Hamilton RBI. Steve Martinow had a pair of hits, while Zack Ranta and Chris Redfern each had singles, with Redfern coming in to score.
