Wednesday night will go down as one of the most bizarre nights in the long history of Intercounty Baseball League play at Dominico Field at Christie Pits. The Toronto Maple Leafs came back from 11 runs down to force extra innings before the lights went out in the park at 10 minutes past midnight, resulting in their game with the Burlington Twins being suspended with the score tied 19-19 in the top of the 12th inning. Fans were left in the dark literally and figuratively as the game came to an abrupt halt with the Twins having one runner at first and two men out in the top of the 12th inning. According to IBL Commissioner Joe O'Neill, the game will be resumed at the point of the lights going out tonight at Nelson Park in Burlington, the site of the scheduled game six in the best-of-seven series. The teams will complete the suspended game and if necessary, then play the sixth game of the series immediately after. Toronto leads the opening round series 3-1. Before the lights went out the Leafs staged a dramatic comeback, rallying from an 18-7 deficit to force extra innings. Both teams scored single runs in the 10th before the game went to the top of the 12th still incredibly tied at 19. Matt Spillman, Ian Choy, Darryl Pui, Greg Densem and Jonathan Slattery all had three hits for the Twins, who had 21 hits and squandered a glorious chance to send the series back to Burlington at 3-2 instead of 3-1. Burlington used five pitchers including Kyle Bolton for two innings of relief, who was the final Twins pitcher before the suspension. Toronto also used five pitchers, including infielder Jarrod Ivan, who tossed one inning when the score was 16-7. He gave up two runs in the seventh but when the Leafs scored seven runs in the seventh to get within 18-14, Sam Jew came on in relief and allowed just one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings and was still pitching when the end came in the 12th. Kyle DeGrace, Jon Waltenbury and Jeremy Walker all had three hits for the Leafs, who had 19 hits.
