IBL Player of the Week - Chehales Tapscott

Published on July 3, 2013 under International Basketball League (IBL) News Release

Earning the final POTW and second this season, 6'6" F Chehales Tapscott, 2012 IBL Rookie of the Year and All Star averaged 26ppg, 14rpg shooting 64% from the field with the highest efficiency rating last week in two games. Not to mention breaking the Most Double Doubles in a Row in a Season, hitting 18 in the Volcanoes final home game this season, going for 19 as his team heads into the IBL Playoffs, facing the host, Portland Chinooks July 4th.

Fellow 2012 IBL All Star and recipient of two POTW nods this season, 6'9" F Jared Cunningham with the Portland Chinooks acknowledges Tapscotts accomplishments. "Chey deserves another POTW, because he works harder than most people do. Congratulations to him, he goes out there and gets it, relentless on the boards and on the offensive end, he competes every game. Now the double double, every game for 18 games straight, that's impressive. I feel good about facing my man Chey to start off the playoffs at our house, it has become quite a rivalry and will be a good physical game. Anyone can win, but it will take a team effort," Cunningham stated.

"Chey could win POTW every week. He makes my job easier because of his ability to score in so many different ways," Head Coach Joe Navarro of the Vancouver Volcanoes shared. "Not to mention he is a rebounding machine. Chey is a better teammate than he is a player, which is funny to say about a guy who gets 24 and 15 every night."

When a player is matched with a great coach, you get great results, and that is how this player feels. "I really appreciate Coach Navarro he has helped me out, putting in a lot of sets for me to get open. He makes me play hard every single game and even in practice, he is always on my tail. Navarro is not only a great coach but a great person off the court, me and the rest of the players really respect him."

"I feel good about getting a second player of the week award; it's just hard work paying off. I give a lot of credit to my teammates, without them I would not be as efficient; my teammates are just so deadly from the outside they open up the court for me," the humble forward shared.

"As far as the record, I did not intend to break the record for most double doubles in a row, it's what I do, and it just so happens that I broke the record. I bust my tail every day, work hard and come out with a mindset every single night that I am get to on the boards and no one is going to stop me. The scoring is not as important for me, as long as we're winning. I am just playing my role and we are out here trying to get wins as a team."

It's an effort that a father can be proud of and the elder Tapscott certainly is. "He achieves all his goals that he sets himself up to do, and I feel like he is doing that and more. I see consistency and efficiency as he is growing up, being overseas was a good life experience for him. Chey is starting to see that it will take a lot of effort in order to accomplish his mission which is to be a pro basketball player in the NBA," father of the now four time IBL POTW in two seasons, Lawrence Tapscott shared about his son.
