Mat-Su Miners News Release

PALMER, Alaska - An hour-long game delay and intermittent rain could not stop Mat-Su Miners left-handed pitcher Jacob Hughey from heating up on the mound on Sunday afternoon.

The Long Beach State freshman recorded 11 strikeouts in five innings of work to lead the Miners to a 7-1 victory over the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks.

"The pitching staff has been fantastic," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "They've attacked the zone well and thrown a ton of strikes. The guys compete real hard."

The Chinooks initially jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI groundout from first baseman Ethan Whisker.

The Miners responded with an offensive barrage in the fourth inning, relying on a three-run home run from Josh Scudder to take a 3-1 lead.

"I hit a slider that was inside," Scudder said. "He worked me away with two sliders to start the at-bat, and he tried to get me to chase a little bit with fastballs. He came back in with the slider and I put a good swing on it."

The team would then capitalize on four walks and singles from shortstop Josh Bissonette and second baseman Levi Jordan to take a 6-1 advantage later in the inning.

The Miners would add to the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Jordan's two-out infield single scored Scudder and advanced designated hitter Tyler Wyatt to second base.

Freshman reliever Austin Treadwell provided three hitless innings of relief for the Miners, while freshman closer Gage O'Brien took the mound in the ninth inning to close the game.

Chinooks starting pitcher Nick Campe allowed six runs on four hits on Sunday. The sophomore right-hander recorded four strikeouts and walked four batters.

"We scuffled there a little early, their starter was really good," Taylor said. "It was really one big hit, and then (the offense) starts to get going."

The Anchorage Glacier Pilots travel to Palmer tomorrow evening for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Miners at Hermon Brothers Field.
