Wichita Wings News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wild (2-0) defeated the Salina Bombers (0-1) 63-34 Saturday night in Salina. The Bombers, hosting their first ever game to a sellout crowd, put up a good fight but were dominated on both lines of scrimmage by the Wild. Wichita was led by running back Tywon Hubbard's 4 rushing touchdowns in the first half and a big 2nd quarter that saw the Wild force two turnovers and score 28 points.

The Wild and Bombers traded blows in an exciting and competitive 1st quarter. Wichita missed a field goal on their opening drive and Salina capitalized with a 45 yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage, they were unsuccessful on their two point conversion attempt. Tywon Hubbard would get the Wild on the board with a 7 yard touchdown run after a Bombers unsportsmanlike penalty put the Wild in great field position. The Bombers answered with a 1 yard run and converted on the two point conversion to make it 7-14 Bombers. On the ensuing kickoff Tywon Hubbard took it all the way back to the 5 yard line and would punch it in on the very next play. Alex Fambrough missed the extra point to end the first quarter with the score Wichita 13, Salina 14.

Wichita would turn up the heat in the 2nd quarter. Defensive lineman Matt Moss blocked a field goal attempt and the Wild recovered for a safety on the opening drive. Hubbard would add his 3rd and 4th rushing touchdowns on consecutive possessions to give Wichita a 29-20 lead. On Salina's next possession Moss again came up big chasing Bomber quarterback Dane Simoneau down from behind causing a fumble as he took him to the ground. Wild linebacker Sam Maxwell scooped the ball up at the 20 and easily made his way to the end zone for another Wild touchdown. Following a late interception from rookie corner Kiaree Daniels, Wichita quarterback Rocky Hinds found receiver Tim Simmons for a touchdown with little time remaining in the first half. Wichita would take a 43-20 lead into halftime.

Wichita opened the 2nd half with another Hinds touchdown pass to receiver Joe Kassanavoid following a Salina turnover on downs. Wild kicker Alex Fambrough connected on a short field goal to put the Wichita lead at 53-20. The Bombers would score one touchdown in the 3rd when running back Demetrius Cox made a great catch on a ball that was tipped in the end zone by both a Salina receiver and a Wichita defensive back. Taking over for Hinds in the 4th, backup quarterback Nick Hardesty had a goal line sneak to put the game out of reach for the Bombers. Salina receiver Pelton Smalls caught his second touchdown for Salina late in the 4th and Wichita finished the scoring on Fambrough's second field goal of the night to put the final score at 63-34. The game saw multiple unsportsmanlike penalties for both squads and featured several small scuffles throughout. The Bombers played well in their first ever game but were outmatched by Wichita's size and experience. Salina will have to wait till May 11th for their shot at revenge when they travel to Hartman Arena to take on the Wild.
