Hounds Beat Gorillas 5-4 In A Shootout

AMARILLO, TEXAS - The Youngstown SteelHounds defeated the Amarillo Gorillas 5-4 in a shootout at the Amarillo Civic Center on Sunday night. The Hounds improve to 29-18-4 (62 points) and are in second place in the Northeast Division and fourth in the Northern Conference.

At 18:38 of the first period Chris Lipsett scored his first of three goals on the night to give the Gorillas a 1-0 lead after one period.

In the second period Chris Richards scored at 4:51 to tie the game at one. Kevin Jarman netted his third goal in two nights at 15:31 to give Youngstown a 2-1 lead after two periods. Jarman has 18 goals and 32 points on the season.

In the third period Bill Vandermeer scored at 1:59 to tie the game at two. Chris Richards added his second of the night and 18th of the season at 4:06 to give the Hounds a 3-2 lead. The Gorillas (18-25-8, 44 points) who came in needing a victory to move into a tie for the fifth and final Southern Conference playoff spot were able to tie the game thanks to Chris Lipsett's second of the night at 8:09. Youngstown took the lead back with nine minutes to play thanks to Petr Pohl's sixth shorthanded goal of the season to make it 4-3. With 46 seconds left and an extra attacker on the ice Lipsett slapped a one-timer past Kevin Beech to complete the hat trick and tie game at four to force overtime.

The game went to a shootout and needed all five rounds as Chris Martini scored the lone goal for Amarillo but it was Chris Richards in round three and Jason Baird in round four who were able to give Youngstown the 5-4 win. Baird has two game winning goals this season that have came in a shootout. Beech made 36 saves on 40 shots in the win for Youngstown.

The win puts Youngstown in fourth place in the Northern Conference standings with 13 games to play in the regular season. The road trip finishes up on Tuesday night when they take on the Texas Brahmas (29-20-1, 59 points) at 8:05. The Brahmas trail the Mississippi RiverKings (29-19-2, 60 points) by one point for the fifth and final playoff spot. All SteelHounds games are available on ESPN Radio 1240 and SteelHounds.com.
