Homers Equal Dollars for United Way

The final numbers are in and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees helped raise $27,674.50 for the United Ways of Lackawanna County and Wyoming Valley through the HR Team Program.

For every home run hit by the Yankees in 2008, participating sponsors agreed to donate $25 to the program. Including playoffs, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees clubbed 139 home runs. Since the program's inaugural season in 1990, the Home Run Team Program has raised more than $525,000.

"We're proud to help support the United Way and the great programs that they offer," said SWB Yankees President Kristen Rose. "Their efforts in both Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties help numerous people and have a positive impact on our community."

Going to bat for the United Way of Lackawanna County were five companies: AAA North Penn, Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank, Mercy Health Partners, Times-Tribune newspaper and Moses Taylor Hospital.

While the following companies contributed to the United Way of Wyoming Valley: Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs and Penn Millers Insurance Company.

Two businesses-ShurSave Supermarkets and Wegmans Food Markets-signed on to contribute to both United Way chapters and split their donations equally among the two.

As part of the Home Run Team program, members of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee team conducted an on-field youth clinic at PNC Field. More than 50 children from both agencies participated in the clinic and learned the finer points of hitting, pitching, fielding and base running.
