Huntington Heroes News Release

With so much settled in the AIFA's north division the Heroes game at Pittsburgh Friday evening could have been a night where they could have coasted and rested up for a big showdown with Canton next week. A win or loss this night didn't mean a thing, because the winner of the Heroes/Legends game next week will clinch the second spot in the north and a home playoff game. But the Heroes didn't rest, they stepped on the accelerator and never let up in a 69-26 drubbing of the Pittsburgh River Rats.

One phrase sums up this game; Total Domination. The Heroes used every tool in their arsenal to dominate the River Rats. Donte Newsome got the game started on a high note, scoring on a 23 yard TD run, his first of two on the evening. A dominating defensive performance helped the Heroes open a 42-14 halftime lead. At the half the defense had recorded three sacks, and was hurrying Pittsburgh QB David Dinkins throughout the half. "We put pressure on their quarterback all night," said Heroes head coach Garry McPeek. "We played great in all areas. We got pressure on defense, had a bunch of sacks and only had one turnover on offense." The special teams got in on the act as well. "Adam Jones hit two rouge's in a row early on that set the tone of the game," said McPeek. "Those were the first two rouge's in this building."

The offense was again led by a strong night from Dane Damron, who threw 5 TD passes. Gerald Clark caught 3 of those 5 TD passes. "We came here and took care of business. We came out of here healthy. Now it's time to get ready for Canton."

The Heroes next game is a big one. The Heroes (10-3) travel to Canton next Friday to take on the Legends (9-4). The winner of that game will clinch the second seed in the north division and will host the other team in the first round of the playoffs the following week. The Heroes have never beaten the Legends losing twice to them last season and lost 69-52 in a shootout earlier this season. Kickoff at Canton is set for 7:00 next Friday night. The Heroes extended their winning streak to 7 and they set a franchise record for wins in a season at 10. Last season the Heroes went 9-5.
