November 8, 2004 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. â They were Gators, Wildcats, Buccaneers, Bulldogs, Sandcrabs and even Green Wave. Now they're Hawgs.
The eight founding players for the Daytona Beach Hawgs were announced today at a media event and include many familiar faces for area football fans.
"I am so impressed with the quality of football talent in the Daytona Beach area,'' said Hawgs coach Ervin Bryson. "We have what we feel is an outstanding nucleus for a winning football team."
Only one player does not have ties to the Daytona Beach area, but is familiar with Coach Bryson. Wide receiver Robert Bailey has four years of indoor football experience, including two with Coach Bryson at Winston-Salem and Sioux City last fall. He was an NIFL All-Star in 2002 with 105 receptions for 1,142 yards and 35 touchdowns.
"Robert Bailey will quickly become a fan favorite at the Ocean Center this fall," Bryson said. "He's a game breaker with speed who runs precise pass routes and has the knack to get open."
The rest of the Hawgs' line-up is a "Who's Who" of former Daytona Beach area standouts, including:
QB Ty Lohman (Father Lopez, Kansas Wesleyan) â Former Green Wave owns several passing records at Kansas Wesleyan
S Jon Xynidis (Seabreeze, University of Florida) â The only Gator football player ever with a last name beginning with "X," made his mark with special teams play, blocking a punt in a win at Vanderbilt and even making an edition of ESPN's Plays of The Week.
OL Tommy Moody (Pierson Taylor, Florida) â Started 18 games at UF; was on the roster of the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers; played for Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. Currently coaches at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, FL.
WR Joe Giddens (Mainland, Bethune-Cookman) â Spent time with the Arena Football League's Toronto Phantoms and CFL's Toronto Argonauts after a strong career for Bethune-Cookman. Also a coach at Spruce Creek.
S David Lynch (Spruce Creek) â All conference defensive back for the Hawks.
OL Robbie Reese (Pierson Taylor, Bethune-Cookman) â Anchored the offensive line that helped Bethune-Cookman make two NCAA I-AA Playoff appearances
Roy Williams (DeLand, UCF) -- Started for the Golden Knights at defensive end his senior year.
