As Chatham Bars Inn prepares for the Annual Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame Inductions, the Harwich Mariners are looking forward to welcoming old faces back to town.
This year's inductees include former players Peter Ford, Casey Close and Mike Loggins. In addition, Harwich Executive Jim McGonigle will be awarded the Fred Ebbett Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Mariner and 2005 Hall of Fame Inductee Pat Pacillo will also be in attendance.
Ford, a Cape League vice president, was one of the last players to be "grandfathered" by the league, allowing him to play four seasons with the Harwich town team even though his collegiate eligibility had expired.
A Harwich native and a graduate of Boston College - he pitched the Eagles to the College World Series in 1967 - Ford was a two-time Cape League all-star and won 18 games in his career with had a 3.36 ERA. He twice had seasons of 6-1. He was signed by the Baltimore Orioles and pitched in their farm system before going into education and private business.
Close was a versatile pitcher/outfielder who was an all-star for Harwich in 1984 and '85. The University of Michigan All-American hit .329, with six homer and 36 RBIs in 1984, while also going 2-0, 3.19 ERA on the mound. In 1985 he hit .284 with 11 homers and 30 RBI and was the Sportsmanship Award winner. Close is now a sports agent, with Derek Jeter and Ryan Howard among his clients.
Loggins, an outfielder from the University of Arkansas, batted .343 with 39 RBIs and 13 home runs for Harwich in 1984. He was the league's Outstanding Pro Prospect award winner and MVP of the All-Star game at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. He played seven seasons in the minors, advancing to Triple A.
Pat Pacillo, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005, played his college ball at Seton Hall University before playing for the Cincinnati Reds. He also was a member of the 1984 USA Baseball Team.
