HARLINGEN, Texas - Erik Moreno and Todd Lutz combined on a three-hit shutout to lead the host Harlingen WhiteWings to a 9-0 victory over the Brownsville Toros in the nightcap of action on the first day in the inaugural season of the Texas Winter League.
Moreno, a Harlingen South High graduate, allowed two hits and walked three. He struck out three in three innings and recorded the victory. Lutz went the final four innings, striking out five in a row at one point, and six overall. He retired the final 11 batters of the game, giving up one hit and one walk.
Harlingen's offense was led by a couple players from last summer's Rio Grande Valley team. Right fielder Julian Williams went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Left fielder Bub Bergstrom walked twice, singled and scored a run.
Moreno helped his own cause with an RBI double in the third inning to score the first run.
Brownsville starter Adam Cox, a fourth-round pick by Cleveland in 2000, pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one. Reliever Damon Miller (0-1) allowed seven runs (three earned) in two innings. Ryan Valyan also allowed two runs in two innings.
Brad Turney went 1-for-2 with a walk. Catcher Kevin MacIlvane walked twice. The Toros only had a runner reached third base twice in the game.
