Hamm Named Player of the Week
Published on August 4, 2003 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, August 4, 2003) - Washington's Mia Hamm has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending August 3, 2003. The all-time leading scorer in international soccer history, Hamm recorded three consecutive goals, including the game-winner, in 15 minutes to lead the Freedom to a 5-0 victory over San Jose on Saturday, August 2. With the victory, Washington clinched a spot in the 2003 WUSA playoffs.
Hamm began her scoring frenzy in the 41st minute as she used her head to pound a pass from Kelly Golebiowski past San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene for a 1-0 Washington lead. She struck again in the 50th minute when Steffi Jones placed an Abby Wambach cross at Hamm's feet and she calmly touched it past Beene. Hamm completed her scoring run five minutes later as she received a pass from Wambach and chipped the ball with the outside of her right foot past a charging Beene to make the score 3-0.
The two-time World Cup champion leads the WUSA in points (33) and assists (11) and is fourth in the league with 11 goals. She also is tied as the WUSA leader for game-winning goals (4) and hat tricks (1). Hamm is the only player to receive the MET-Rx Player of the Week award three times this season. She also received the honor once in 2002 and twice in 2001, bringing her total to six and making her the WUSA record holder for most player of the week awards.
Hamm's 47 points (22 first, three second) decisively beat out Maren Meinert of Boston. Other players who received votes were Washington's Wambach, Boston's Dagny Mellgren, Philadelphia's Emily Burt and Marinette Pichon, and San Diego's Jenni Branam and Julie Fleeting. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
