Hamm Named Player of the Week

April 7, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, April 7, 2003) - Washington's Mia Hamm has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending April 6, 2003. The two-time FIFA World Player of the Year scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the other score as the Freedom defeated the Carolina Courage 2-1 on April 5 in a rematch of Founders Cup II.

Following two injury-plagued seasons, Hamm played the full 90 minutes in a WUSA game for the first time since August 11, 2001, and the world's all-time leading scorer at the international level showed she is 100 percent healthy with her performance against the Courage. Hamm played with a shoulder injury during the 2001 WUSA season and spent the bulk of the 2002 season recovering from knee surgery. Despite playing limited minutes, Hamm did lead the WUSA in points per 90 minutes (3.92) in 2002.

After an early Carolina goal, Hamm assisted Abby Wambach on Washington's first goal on a deftly placed free kick into the penalty area to bring the Freedom back into the match just before halftime. She then notched the game-winner in the 59th minute to exact revenge on the Courage for her team's 3-2 loss at Founders Cup II last August. Although not noticeable to the casual onlooker, Hamm also regularly tracked back on defense to assist against Carolina's Birgit Prinz and Danielle Fotopoulos, as Washington limited the Courage to just four shots on goal.

The 31-year-old Hamm garnered 40 points in the voting (16 first place, 8 second place) to outdistance Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper (20 pts.), Wambach (9 pts.), Boston's Maren Meinert (7 pts.), Boston's Karina LeBlanc (6 pts.), San Jose's Katie Barnes (5 pts.), Philadelphia's Melissa Moore (3 pts.) and San Jose's Pretinha (1 pt.). The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
