GWL Player and Pitcher of the Week Named

June 5, 2018 - Great West League (GWL) News Release

Portland, Oregon - The opening week of the 2018 GWL season saw plenty of offense, including two home runs from a Klamath Falls Gems outfielder. Meanwhile, a Chico Heat hurler managed a victory with a stellar start.

Outfielder Mike Hicks, who plays at the University of Portland, added five RBIs to his home runs and went 6-17 (.353) for the week, which was enough to earn him GWL Player of The Week honors. The 6-7, 250-pound native of Couer d' Alene, Idaho was drafted out of high school in the 27th round of the 2015 draft by the New York Yankees.

Brigham Young University pitcher Justin Sterner is the GWL Pitcher of the Week, after earning a win in his first start of the season for the Heat. Sterner, who was 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA this spring in eight games for BYU, got the win over the San Francisco Seals, going 5-2/3 shutout innings, allowing only 7-hits, while striking out 11 and walking just a pair. The 6-1, 200-pound right-hander is a native of Laguna Niguel, California.
