November 30, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Charleston Gunners News Release
The final roster is being prepared by Coach Wayne Casey and his staff in preparation for the Charleston Gunners' 2012 season opener on Jan. 6.
A number of players have already signed by the Gunners following the team "Vet Camp" on Nov. 19.
Leading the way is shooting guard, and former West Virginia Mountaineer, Lionel Armstead. During his four-year career in Morgantown, spanning from 1999-2002, the 5-foot-11 Toledo, Ohio native averaged nearly 11 points per game and was one of the top 3-point shooters in Mountaineer history, ranking seventh all-time.
Other shooting guards who have already signed are 6-3 Chuka Iloegbu, a native of Brentwood, N.Y. that played his college ball at Coppin State, and former 6-2 West Virginia State guard and South Charleston native Will Collins.
At point guard, a couple of players have been signed -- Iloegbu's former Coppin State teammate Vince Goldsberry, a 6-0 Newark, Del. native, and 6-1 Kwan Waller, who played at Kentucky Wesleyan and is originally from Rockford, Ill.
The lone small forward signed thus far is 6-6 James Helton, a West Virginia State alum who hails from Columbus, Ohio.
At the other forward spot are an array of big men, some of whom could also see some time at the three-spot.
At 6-11, Lester Ferguson, from Baton Rouge, La., is the biggest of those big men to sign so far. Ferguson played college ball at Arkansas-Fort Smith, and later at NAIA power Robert Morris in the Chicago suburbs.
Joining him is 6-7 JeJuan Brown of Biloxi, Miss., who competed at Vanderbilt and Arkansas State, and Jamaal Caterina, who played at American University and New Hampshire before returning to his hometown of Portland to play at Southern Maine.
Ibrahim Marone, 6-9 from Troutwood, Ohio and formerly of the University of Charleston, will also be fighting for time at power forward along with 6-10 James Stewart from Delaware.
Additional players are expected to sign in the coming days.
The Gunners tip-off their regular season at Dayton on Jan. 6 before playing their home opener Jan. 8 against those same Dayton Air Strikers at St. Albans High School. The team is currently working on scheduling preseason games.
