(Pleasanton, CA. March 14, 2006) The Golden Baseball League announced today that Greg Stevens, catcher for the Surprise Fightin' Falcons in 2005, has had his contract acquired by the Detroit Tigers.

Stevens is the fifth player from the 2005 Surprise roster to be signed by a major league organization joining teammates Bernie Dennis (Brewers), David Joliff (Padres), Ryan Anderson (Brewers), and David Seccombe (Yankees).

Stevens, 24, a switch-hitter from Averett University in Virginia, was the Surprise Fightin' Falcons starting catcher last season. He hit .273 with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs in 71 games. He also earned GBL Player of the Week honors for the week of July 24th. He started his professional career in 2003 with Adirondack in the independent Northeast League as a backup catcher. He moved to the Gateway Grizzlies in the Frontier League in 2004 and enjoyed a breakout season finishing third in the league with 20 home runs. He was traded to Surprise prior to the 2005 season and was quickly signed off their roster by the Cleveland Indians. Released the last day of spring training by the Tribe, he rejoined Surprise and prospered under the coaching of his new manager, former major league All-Star catcher Ozzie Virgil, Jr.

Stevens was involved in an off-season trade with the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League and would have played in Joliet if not acquired by Detroit.
