Grant-Mentis Named January PHF Player of the Month

(Brooklyn, N.Y.) - The Premier Hockey Federation today announced that forward Mikyla Grant-Mentis of the Toronto Six is the PHF Player of the Month for January after scoring eight points in two games including three goals and five assists along with a plus-minus rating of plus-6.

Grant-Mentis became the first player in PHF history to record a six-point performance in a single game when she tallied two goals and four assists as part of an 8-3 win over Buffalo on Jan. 16. One day earlier she scored her league-leading fourth game-winning goal of the season along with an assist in the 6-1 victory over the Beauts. The Six sophomore now has a streak of five-straight multi-point games and has helped Toronto maintain first place in the PHF overall standings with a 9-1-1 record that includes a perfect six wins on Canadian ice. In addition to her regular season success last month, the Merrimack College standout competed in her first PHF All-Star Showcase on Jan. 29 where she scored twice with one assist as a member of Team Darkangelo.

The 23-year-old from Brampton, Ontario leads the PHF in all major offensive categories including eight goals, 14 assists and 22 points produced over 11 games. Her +22 rating and 56 shots on goal are also PHF leading figures. In 19 career regular season games the reigning PHF MVP has 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points.

Also considered for the January award was Allie Thunstrom who scored four goals and one assist for five points in two games for the Minnesota Whitecaps, then scored the shootout winner plus two assists as All-Star captain during the opening game of Saturday's showcase. Her month also included an appearance at the ECHL All-Star Classic where she scored a goal. Fellow All-Star captain Shiann Darkangelo of the Toronto Six also finished the month with five points in two games scoring twice with three assists. On defense, Toronto's Stephanie Sucharda led the way with a goal and four assists, followed by Minnesota's Patti Marshall with four assists. In goal, Six stopper Elaine Chuli won twice while posting a save percentage of .968 before earning All-Star MVP honors for the winning Team Dempsey.
