New Jersey Ironmen News Release
Newark, N.J. (Tuesday, November 25, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen officially named midfielder Goran Vasic the assistant to Head Coach Omid Namazi today. Vasic, who will split time as a player and coach this season, will help lead the Ironmen into Prudential Center for their 2008-09 home opener on Sunday, December 14th, for a 4:00 kickoff against the Chicago Storm.
"I couldn't be more pleased to have someone of the caliber of Goran Vasic serve as my assistant for the upcoming season," Namazi remarked. "His knowledge of the game will bring valuable insight to the team and to the players individually. He will assist me in the day to day planning and execution of practice sessions, as well as our game plan going into each contest this season."
Vasic was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and moved to the United States in May of 1997. He started his American career with the Houston Hotshots of the Continental Indoor Soccer League and completed his 11th season in professional indoor soccer this past year. Vasic, a member of two indoor championship teams, played for the Cleveland Crunch from 1998-2001 before playing for the Philadelphia KiXX from 2001-06. After a year with the Milwaukee Wave, he made the move to Newark by signing with the Ironmen prior to the 2007-08 season. For his indoor career, he has tallied 591 points to go along with 241 assists and 162 blocks. He is also a USSF-A licensed coach and can be found training players of all levels throughout the state of New Jersey.
"Omid knows the game inside and out and has the type of coaching ability that demands respect from those who play for him," Vasic stated. "For me to have an opportunity to learn from a coach like Omid is very rewarding."
While playing for the Ironmen last year, Vasic turned in one of his best indoor seasons. He finished second on the team with 53 points by recording 10 goals and a team-leading 29 assists in 21 contests. He commented on the transition from being a player to becoming a coach.
"As I'm getting older, I'm preparing for the next step in my career," he said. "As you get further into your career, you learn that it's all about the team, not about yourself. This type of thinking is what makes me know I want to coach."
Vasic and the New Jersey Ironmen will make their 2008-09 season debut at Prudential Center on Sunday, December 14th, opening up their sophomore campaign at 4:00 p.m. against the Chicago Storm. The Ironmen are also partnering with Jersey Cares by hosting a coat drive at their home opener to benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. Fans are encouraged to bring gently-worn coats that can be donated at the Prudential Center entrances. The Ironmen provide fun and affordable family entertainment with tickets starting at only $10!
