Golden Baseball League announces August Players of the Month

September 2, 2005 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release

(Pleasanton, CA. September 1, 2005) The Golden Baseball League announced today the August winners of the Player and Pitcher of the Month award. Based on recommendations from SportsTicker, this month's winners are outfielder Ryan Webb of the Long Beach Armada and pitcher Grant Gregg of the Chico Outlaws.

Ryan Webb, the Long Beach Armada centerfielder, hit .359 in the month of August as he led the GBL in hits (37), runs scored (22), doubles (10), and stolen bases (10). His batting average and on-base percentage were second best in the league as well for the month. Webb, a 26 year-old out of Chico State and drafted by the Anaheim Angels in 2001 ended the season with a .344 batting average and easily led the GBL in runs scored with 75 for the year. He ended the season with a 14-game hit streak, had 13 multi-hit games in the month including two with 4 hits, reached base in 23 of his team's 24 games in August, and provided the spark for the Armada winning a playoff berth.

Grant Gregg, the Chico Outlaws' 24 year-old lefty pitcher out of Abilene Christian University, went 5-0 with a 1.08 E.R.A. in August. In 50 innings, he struck out 40 and walked just 9 batters. He also threw four complete games during the month, including one shutout. This is Gregg's second straight GBL Pitcher of the Month award as he improved his season record to 12-2 with a 1.97 E.R.A. Gregg's efforts led the way as Chico climbed into contention and then clinched a playoff berth on the last day of the regular season. Drafted in the 9th round out of high school by the Minnesota Twins, Gregg chose college and attended Texas A&M before transferring to Abilene Christian. At Abilene Christian he was named Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year. Gregg began his professional career in the Frontier League, though he was quickly acquired by the San Diego Padres, climbing as high as their AA ball club in Mobile, Alabama. A native of Abilene, Texas, Grant caught the eye of college and pro scouts as a high school standout, including a three-year record of 39 and 7 and twice being named to the Texas All-State team.

Other top players who received nominations for Player of the Month include Henry Calderon (Yuma Scorpions), Alexis Hernandez (Yuma Scorpions), Marcus Jensen (Mesa Miners) and Mike Mallory (Chico Outlaws). Other nominations for Pitcher of the Month include Thomas King (Mesa Miners), Pete Hartmann (Surprise Fightin' Falcons), Brett Grebe (Surprise Fightin' Falcons), and Takaaki Igarashi (Japan Samurai Bears)
