Gober drops anvil on RoadRunners offense

ST. GEORGE, Utah (August 10) - Long Beach native Dusty Gober kept St. George off balance all night, scattering seven hits, as the offense backed him up for a 12-2 Armada win at Bruce Hurst Field on Monday. Long Beach avoided a sweep to improve to 9-13 in the second half (29-31 overall).

Only two base runners got to second base off Gober until the eighth inning. The Lakewood High alum pitched his longest outing of the season, going 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs off seven hits. Gober (3-0) faced no more than four batters in each of the first seven innings.

Offensively, the top of the Armada lineup provided all the offense necessary. Jonny Kaplan, Omar Bramasco and Steve Moss - the 1, 2 and 3 hitters - combined to go 10-for-18 with eight RBI and three runs scored.

The Armada struck in the second inning when Josh Womack singled with two outs and stole second base on the first pitch to Jonny Kaplan. Kaplan hit a high chopper toward third base, and as Kaplan legged it out for an infield hit, Womack never stopped running at third base and slid home safely for a 1-0 Armada lead.

Long Beach added to the lead in the fourth inning. With runners in scoring position and one out, Jonny Kaplan hit a dribbler down the first base line, scoring Dan Luyben from third. The first baseman missed the tag on Kaplan, and Kaplan slid head first into the base just ahead of the throw. With runners on the corners, Omar Bramasco lined into right field to score Daryl Jones from third. Kaplan slid into third base as the throw from right field skipped into foul territory. Kaplan came home to score on the error, and one batter later, Steve Moss drove in Bramasco for a 5-0 lead.

RoadRunners second baseman Garry Harris led off the bottom of the fourth inning taking the first pitch he saw from Gober over the center field wall for a solo homerun.

The Armada added a run in the sixth when Jones scored on Bramasco's third single of the game. Bramasco finished the night 4-for-6 with three RBI and two run scored. Moss also totaled four hits with a pair of RBI.

Long Beach had 10 singles in its first 10 hits until Napoleon Calzado and Matt Edgecombe hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the seventh inning, chasing RoadRunners starting pitcher David Seccombe from the game. Seccombe (7-3), who threw a two-hit shutout against the Armada at Blair Field on July 23, took the loss giving up nine runs off 13 hits. The Fleet added three runs in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 9-1.

Womack, Bramasco and Moss all doubled in the ninth inning as the Armada scored three more runs in the final inning, extending the lead to 12-2.

Sean Buller pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings of relief to close the ballgame.

The Armada is off until Friday, August 14, when the Yuma Scorpions visit Blair Field to begin a three game series. Left-hander Ben Fox is scheduled to take the mound for Long Beach to begin the series. First pitch on Friday is 7:05pm, and the first 500 fans into the ballpark will receive squishy planes courtesy of Long Beach Airport.
